Team 97 Captain Andy Sands stares down a Par 3 pin in the 2011 PAC

Nike Announces Sands’ 2012 PAC Gear

On the eve of the 2012 Masters Tournament, Nike took the opportunity of the big stage to announce the clothing choices the company has made for Team 97 Captain Andy Sands for the 2012 Phi Alpha Cup. While Sands has never displayed the outrageous fashion flare of former 97 member Chandler Willett – a style that influenced the likes of Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler – Nike was thoughtful in giving Sands styling options that represent his classic sporting taste, while implementing Nike’s new dry wicking technology to combat the humid Wilmington, NC conditions. Sands has partnered with Nike for the past five Phi Alpha Cups for clothing, although the 97 Captain still plays exclusively with Callaway golf clubs.

Sands unveiled the 2012 looks for a select pool of reporters on Tuesday and discussed some of the details surrounding the clothing choices. “Several factors went into the decision this year. Obviously the dry wicking technology will be huge. Also, you can always find closeout sales from the last year’s inventory this time of year, and when you combine that with the online gift card I found in the bottom of my drawer, it’s almost like Nike gave me these golf shirts for free.”

Sands is not the only PAC player already ‘gearing up’ for the 2012 PAC. Team 98 in the offseason moved to the white TaylorMade r11 drivers and fairway woods in a move designed to improve performance, team solidarity and raise their intimidation factor over Team 97. Winston Black, the only exception to the new r11 team, has painted his Callaway woods white.
