A Phi Alpha Cup Charter Member, Team 97’s Steve Burr has been one of the event’s most controversial figures over the years. Nicknamed “Scuba Steve” early in his PAC career, Burr’s tendency to hit balls in the water allowed him to set the record for longest winless streak in Phi Alpha Cup history (2005-2007).
Burr’s dramatic turnaround in the 2007 PAC, where he helped lead Team 97 to its first Phi Alpha Cup victory and was awarded the Jeffrey J. Eaton MVP Award, stoked an internal fire within Burr and set off a series of events that were often captured by the press and made him a tabloid favorite. During this period of Burr’s career, Burr commonly disparaged Team 98 opponents, fought with Team 97 teammates, guaranteed victories, threatened retirement and traveled with a large entourage.
However, after a period of soul-searching, Burr underwent a public persona re-make, called “Burr 2.0.” Burr has since displayed a much calmer demeanor, one that consists of a more determined focus on his golf play and a move from the crazy night life of Manhattan to the calmer suburb surroundings of Jersey City, NJ. The re-make seemed to work, allowing Burr to win his first PAC Singles Match over personal rival Jeff Eaton in 2012.
Burr resides with his wife and two children and serves as the Deputy Tresurer of the Jacques Cousteau Foundation and a member of the Greater New Jersey Kiwanis Club.
