Two of golf’s most recognizable statesmen, Steve Burr and Camilo Villegas, took to the TPC Course at Hoboken this week at the Jacques Cousteau Charity Classic. The Tournament, which dates back to 2010, was initially organized to help raise money and bring attention to water exploration and research.

Burr has been closely associated with water since his early days as a Phi Alpha Cup player. Pinned with nicknames such as “Scuba Steve,” “Aquaman,” and “Riverboat ‘Rito,” Burr’s habit of letting his golf ball find the water hazards during pivotal moments in Phi Alpha Cup matches has often been a topic of ridicule and scorn, especially early in his career.

“I was thrilled to get the call from Steve, and of course, happy to lend my name to such an important issue,” said Villegas, the three-time PGA Tour winner. “Like a crackhead who goes on to become an anti-drug spokesman, Steve is demonstrating through his tireless work with the Jacques Cousteau Foundation, that one’s phobia of water can be overcome and even be used as an advantage to bring attention to an important issue.”

Burr showed up late for the event, but joined the feature foursome on the back 9 with his entourage in tow – a group that included Villegas, Jacques Cousteau III and Don Cheadle.

“The winner today is water research,” said Burr after his round. “If dunking a few Pinnacles in the drink helps bring a little attention to an important cause, well then, so be it. I’m just doing my small part.”
